Musashi Introduces TractionTech Disconnect™ Technology

Next-Gen Differential Disconnect

Musashi Americas is excited to announce a new approach to differential disconnect technology used in ICE, PHEV, HEV and BEV propulsion AWD systems: the Splined-connection mechanism powered by our patent-pending TractionTech Disconnect™ technology.

By combining splined-connection components, this compact solution is versatile, simple and sturdy, reducing machining costs, and increasing system reliability in all vehicle propulsion systems.

“We simplified current propulsion solutions for faster and quieter actuation,” said Sam Nasser, Director of Engineering at Musashi. “This new design also has other benefits such as faster vehicle assembly, reduced machining costs, and overall better reliability in ICE, PHEV, HEV and BEV propulsion systems.”

Delivering Fast Actuating Time while maintaining low NHV

Complex add-on components can become bottlenecks in today’s automotive landscape. Supply chains are strained, and engineering teams are under pressure to reduce costs and streamline assembly.

TractionTech Disconnect™ differentials offers a simple yet robust solution for final stage of power transmitting systems. A splined shifting mechanism smoothly and quietly connects and disconnects the differential to and from the gearbox or drive unit system faster and much quieter than most existing solutions.

Current preliminary data shows a 20% improvement in actuation time and a 10% improvement in noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) over current dog clutches on the market.

Other benefits and offerings of this new technology include:

  • The seamless transition from 2WD to AWD during coasting enables real-time torque management and improved vehicle dynamics, reducing parasitic drag for energy efficiency and overall range.
  • Compact cover-integrated disconnect mechanism to accommodate tight design packaging and reduce product weight over market alternatives.
  • Can accommodate 2-pinion and 4-pinion designs with minimal changes for increased torque capacity while maintaining same design packaging.
  • Optional Integrated Ring Gear to eliminate Gear assembly and provide higher Gear mesh quality and precision.

Functional Principle of TractionTech Disconnect™

Operating mode: Disconnected*
Coil: De-energized
Wave Spring: Free state/uncompressed
Inner Case + Gear Set + Pinion Shaft rotate with vehicle wheels.
Differential Assembly is stationary and DOES NOT transmit torque.

Operating mode: Connected*
Coil: Energized
Shifting Plate: Force “Fa” applied
Shifting Collar: External Spline engaged with Inner Case Internal Spline
Wave Spring: Compressed and mechanical energy stored
Differential Assembly rotates with vehicle wheels and DOES transmit torque.
* – Coil Not Shown

Operating mode: Disconnected*
Coil: De-energized
Wave Spring: Releases the mechanical energy stored in the form of force “Fr”
Shifting Collar: Repositioned to disconnect mode
Shifting Plate: Repositioned to disconnect mode
Inner Case + Gear Set + Pinion Shaft rotate with vehicle wheels
Differential Assembly is stationary and DOES NOT transmit torque.
